Can Claude do an SEO audit without Ahrefs or Semrush?

Yes for most of an audit, no for two things. Claude can check pages it can read, your Search Console exports and today's results. It cannot know search volumes or a full backlink profile on its own. For those, use a free partial source, or accept the gap and say so in the audit.

What does Claude need from you first?
Three things: your site, your Search Console exports and the instruction to say "unknown" rather than guess. Ask without data and Claude can still answer. Anthropic's documentation warns that language models "can sometimes generate text that is factually incorrect". In SEO, that looks like a plausible volume or ranking with no source.
Search Console gives you most of the data free. Two facts stop false alarms.
The export is a sample. Google says "Data is truncated to 1,000 rows of representative examples of your data."
The totals are not. Google adds: "Totals shown are actual totals, not totals with any row limits applied." The rows won't add up to the total, and that isn't a tracking bug.
How do you run the audit, step by step?
- Crawl or read your pages. In Claude Code, run a crawl of your own site. In the apps, turn on code execution, or paste the HTML of your key templates.
- Download Search Console data. Take the Performance exports for one period, the Page indexing export and the Links report.
- Check the rendered text. If your content appears only after JavaScript runs, tell Claude and paste the rendered HTML.
- Give it one audit prompt. Use the prompt below.
- Verify each finding. Open the page or report behind it before you change anything.
- Order the fixes. Indexing first, then templates that affect many pages, then single pages.

Never state a search volume, a ranking or a backlink count that is not in my files.

Search Console: clicks, positions, indexing and a sample of links. Since 31 August 2026, Google says its generative AI report covers "all websites worldwide", though a site with too few impressions may not see it.
Ahrefs Free, formerly Ahrefs Webmaster Tools: free for sites you verify. It lists 170+ technical and on-page issues, 5,000 crawl credits per verified project each month, and up to 1,000 backlinks at once. It is a useful second opinion on Claude's audit.
Keyword Planner: search estimates inside a Google Ads account. Google says you must enter your billing information to complete the setup.
Anthropic's marketing plugin: a free /seo-audit command. Without a connected tool it uses web search.
When do you actually need Ahrefs or Semrush?
When the job depends on other people's sites. Ahrefs says its subscription plans are what let you analyse unverified websites. If competitor backlinks or large-scale keyword research drive your decisions, a paid suite earns its place, and Anthropic's plugin can connect to one. If you audit your own site, you can start without one.
What can no audit promise?
Rankings. Google's page on hiring an SEO says "No one can guarantee a #1 ranking on Google." An audit lists what is wrong and what to fix. It cannot say what Google will do next.

Questions people ask
Can Claude crawl my whole site?
In Claude Code it can run a crawl script on your machine. In the apps it depends on code execution and network access, and Anthropic says these can vary with your settings.
Can Claude see my Google rankings?
Only if you give it a Search Console export or live results. It has no access to Google's systems.
Is a free audit as good as a paid one?
We know of no independent test that settles this. Paid tools add their own crawl and link data. Claude adds reading and judgement. Compare both on one site you know.
Can ChatGPT do the same?
The same limit applies: no assistant holds Google's data. Judge them with the same export and the same prompt.
