How to use Claude for SEO: which Claude for which job, and what data to give it
By Adrien Pennetier, PENRA · updated
Claude can do SEO work when you hand it data: your pages, your Search Console exports, the live results page. It cannot see rankings, search volume, Google's index or backlinks on its own, so such a figure without a source is a guess. Chat answers questions, Cowork runs longer tasks with files, Claude Code runs crawls and edits site code.
Statements about Claude and Search Console checked against Anthropic's documentation and help center and Google's Search Console help on 15 October 2026.
Can Claude do SEO for my website?
Yes for reading, comparing, counting and writing; no for anything that needs Google's own data. Claude can audit pages it can fetch, read a Search Console export, compare your page with those that rank and check a draft against its sources. Where you rank and who links to you, it only knows if you give it the data.
Ask without data and it still answers. Anthropic's documentation says so plainly: "Even the most advanced language models, like Claude, can sometimes generate text that is factually incorrect or inconsistent with the given context." In SEO this shows up as a plausible search volume, a ranking position or a menu label that does not exist.
Its own knowledge also stops at a date: Anthropic publishes a "Reliable knowledge cutoff" date for each model. A Google change, a new price or a renamed menu after that date is unknown to it until it reads a current page.
The working rule follows: each SEO question goes to Claude with the data that answers it, or with the instruction to go and read it (a web search, a page fetch, a crawl).
Which Claude should you use for each SEO job?
Use the chat for questions on data you paste or upload, Cowork for longer tasks that end in a file, and Claude Code when the job runs scripts on your machine or changes your site's code. All three can load the same skills. The table maps common SEO jobs to a place to run them and the data each needs.
In the chat, Anthropic says code execution and file creation is "available to all Claude users (Free, Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise) on the web, Claude Desktop, and Claude Mobile", which is what lets Claude compute on an uploaded export. Cowork is available on paid plans. Claude Code is, in Anthropic's words, "Available in your terminal, IDE, desktop app, and browser."
| SEO job | Where to run it | Data it needs | Skill for the job |
|---|---|---|---|
| Technical audit of a site | Claude Code, or the apps with code execution and network access | Your URL: a crawl of your own pages | Site X-Ray |
| Reading Search Console performance | Chat, Cowork or Claude Code | Queries and Pages exports for the same dates | Click Radar |
| Pages not indexed | Chat, Cowork or Claude Code | The Page indexing export, then URL Inspection on a few URLs | Index Doctor |
| Is a keyword worth an article? | Any, with web search on | The live first page of results | Odds Maker |
| Content brief | Any, with web search and page reading | The top three to five results, read in full | Gap Hunter |
| Fact-checking a draft | Any; raw page reads are easiest in Claude Code | The draft and each fact's primary source | Truth Serum |
| Where to start, and in what order | The chat is enough | Your site's age, business model and hours per week | True North |
| Fixing titles, canonicals or markup in templates | Claude Code | Your site's source code | None needed: ask directly |
- Site X-Ray: crawls your site and ranks the fixes, with the evidence for each
- Click Radar: turns Search Console exports into at most five actions
- Index Doctor: finds why pages are not indexed and groups fixes by template
- Odds Maker: reads the real first page and says whether to write
- Gap Hunter: builds a brief from what the top results miss
- Truth Serum: checks every claim of a draft at its source
- True North: a 30/60/90-day plan sized to your hours
What can't Claude know, and can you do without Ahrefs or Semrush?
Claude has none of Google's data: not your rankings, not search volume, not Google's index, not your backlinks. Most of it is free in Google Search Console, which Google calls "a free service": export it and give Claude the file. Exact search volume is the gap: Search Console only shows impressions for queries where you already appear.
| What you want to know | Can Claude know it alone? | Where to get it free |
|---|---|---|
| Where your pages rank | No | Search Console, Performance report: Average position by query and by page, then the export button |
| How many people search a phrase | No | Not exactly, for free. Impressions in Search Console for queries you already show for; autocomplete shows what people type, not how many |
| Whether Google indexed a page | No | The Page indexing report and the URL Inspection tool in Search Console |
| Who links to you | No | The Links report in Search Console, which shows "a sample of internal and external links", not every link |
| Who ranks for a query today | Only with web search, or results you paste | A web search, or the first ten results copied from a private window: one sample, one region, one day |
| What your pages contain | Yes, if it can fetch them | A crawl of your site, or the HTML you paste |
Paid SEO suites can connect to Claude and add estimates of volume and backlinks. They help when a job needs those estimates. They are not needed to start: the rows above cover an audit, an indexation diagnosis, a Search Console reading and a decision on a keyword.
How do you use Claude Code for SEO?
Start Claude Code in your site's folder, put your exports beside it and ask one concrete question at a time. Anthropic describes it as a tool that "reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools". For SEO: a crawl run by a script, sums over large exports, template changes you review.
- Install it from Anthropic's overview page. "Most surfaces require a Claude subscription or Anthropic Console account."
- Open it in the folder that holds your site's source, or in an empty folder for an audit of a live site.
- Put your Search Console exports in that folder, for the same dates, and ask a precise question: which pages lost the most clicks between these two periods, which titles do not match the query they appear for.
- When a fact matters, ask Claude to read the raw page. Claude Code's documentation calls its page reader, WebFetch, "lossy by design" and suggests "curl via Bash for the unprocessed page".
- Read each change to a template before it ships: one wrong canonical in a template is wrong on every page that uses it.
To avoid re-explaining your site every session, write its URL list, brand terms and house rules in a CLAUDE.md file in the folder. Anthropic: "Claude reads them at the start of every session."
How do you use Claude Cowork for SEO?
Use Cowork for SEO tasks that take several steps and end in a file: an audit as a spreadsheet, a brief as a document, a reading of this month's exports. Anthropic says Cowork "uses the same agentic architecture that powers Claude Code, with no terminal required". It is available on paid plans: Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise.
In Claude Desktop you can give Claude access to a folder on your computer, so the exports you download from Search Console are readable where they land. Anthropic's help center adds that tasks using files or apps on your computer "need Claude Desktop open".
Cowork loads the skills enabled on your account, not the ones in a folder on your machine. The install guide covers the upload.
Turn on web search for jobs that need today's results, such as a keyword decision or a brief: in the classic chat, open the "+" button and select "Web search". In the new experience there is no toggle, and Claude searches when it helps.
Anthropic is merging Cowork and chat into one conversation, rolling out gradually from Pro and Max plans. Its help center states that in the new experience "everything Claude Cowork does is available from any conversation". If your message box no longer shows separate Chat and Cowork options, you have it. The way to use Claude for SEO does not change.

Why does Claude get SEO facts wrong, and what rule fixes it?
The typical failure is a confident, plausible, false detail: a menu label that does not exist, last year's price, an old version, a statistic nobody published. The fix is one rule: no fact goes on a page until it is found word for word on its primary source, in the page's language, with the date of that reading.
- List every checkable claim in the draft: prices, interface labels and menu paths, versions, numbers, quotes, dates.
- For each, open the page of whoever creates the fact (the vendor, Google's help, the standard), not a blog that repeats it.
- Search the exact string in the raw page. A summary is not proof: Claude Code's documentation warns that a result saying a page "doesn’t mention something may only mean the prompt didn’t ask about it".
- Check labels on the source page in the language of your article. An English menu name in a French article is wrong even when it exists in English.
- Correct the claim, date it with its source, or remove it. Anthropic recommends the same discipline for its own model: have Claude find a supporting quote for each claim, and "If it can't find a quote, it must retract the claim."
- Truth Serum: runs this check on a draft and returns a verdict and a correction per claim
Where do skills fit in SEO work with Claude?
A skill gives Claude a method, not data. The Agent Skills project's overview puts it simply: "At its core, a skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file." That file tells Claude how to do one job. Claude reads each skill's description and loads the right one from your wording, so "audit my site" is enough.
The data still comes from your exports, your pages and the live results. Claude Code's documentation: "Claude uses skills when relevant, or you can invoke one directly with /skill-name." Skills run in Claude Code, Claude.ai, Claude Desktop and Cowork; in the apps, code execution must be on.
SEO Skills by PENRA, which this site sells, is 14 such skills, one per job (audit, indexation, Search Console, keyword decisions, briefs, fact-checking and others), and none of them needs a paid SEO tool. The author's own new site, macplus.pro, was worked with them: its Search Console shows 4.47k clicks and 59k impressions from 14 July to 12 October 2026, at an average position of 7.9. That is one site's result, not a forecast.

Is Claude or ChatGPT better for SEO?
Neither has Google's data, so the same limits apply to both: rankings, volume, the index and backlinks come from your exports, not the model. We know of no independent, current test that settles which does SEO better, and this site sells Claude skills: judge on your own task: same export, same question, each answer checked at the source.
What differs in practice is the setup: whether the assistant can search the web with citations, read your files, run code on them and follow a written method. Claude does all four, through web search, code execution and skills.
The skill format is not Claude-only: the Agent Skills project lists "ChatGPT & Codex" among the products that support it. Whether a given skill behaves the same there depends on the tools and scripts it expects. The pack sold here is built for Claude.
Questions people ask
Do I need a paid Claude plan to use Claude for SEO?
Not for the chat: Anthropic lists code execution and file creation as available on every plan, Free included. Cowork needs a paid plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise), and Claude Code needs a Claude subscription or an Anthropic Console account on most surfaces.
Can Claude ask Google to index my pages?
No. You request indexing yourself, in Search Console's URL Inspection tool, and Google decides whether to index. Claude can tell you which pages are worth requesting and why the others are left out.
Can Claude write my SEO articles?
It can draft from a brief, section by section. Whether the article is worth publishing depends on what it adds that the current results lack and on whether its facts survive a check at the source: both are steps to run around the draft, not things the draft does by itself.
Does Claude remember my site between conversations?
Give it a place to read from. In the Claude apps, a project keeps files, instructions and context together for related work. In Claude Code, a CLAUDE.md file in your site's folder is read at the start of every session.
